Shiny New Chrome

It’s new, and it’s from Google. For many, that’s enough to make them want it. It is Chrome, the new browser that was officially announced today and will be available tomorrow. Simplicity and speed are the claims, and starting Tuesday, millions of Windows users will be able to find out just how polished this Chrome is. Mac and Linux users will be left to wait for a while, even though Google’s announcement states that components from Apple’s WebKit were used in Chrome.

Not only is the browser itself news-worthy, but the method of its announcement is worth a moment, too. First, a comic book was sent out to announce the upcoming product. Some wondered whether it was a joke. Then today, on the U.S. Labor Day holiday, Google announced in its blog that the Chrome browser will be available for download tomorrow. Is this unorthodox approach working? In time we’ll know the download count and the tales of glory and/or horror, but for now, the first page of results from a Google search on “chrome” holds no browser-related entries.

Will you try Chrome?
